Marble

Me:  Fiona, whatever you do just make sure that marble doesn't go in your mouth.
Fiona: Ok, Mom.
Me: And it doesn't go in any other parts of your body either.
Fiona: Ok, Mom.  But Mom, what would happen if the marble went into my heart?
Me: Why would it go to your heart?
Fiona: If it fell in.
Me: It won't, don't worry.
Fiona: But Mom, what if I'm holding the marble, but Iris tries to grab it from me and we start fighting over it, and my hands are slippery and Iris pulls my hand back and the marble slips out of my hand and flies up in the air, but I'm screaming because we were fighting and my mouth is open, and the marble flies into my mouth, past my throat and past those two things that breathe air...and into my heart.  Then what?
Me: Then we will go to the hospital and you will have a surgery to get it out.
Fiona: Oh, ok.

Irishism 2.2

As an insult to her Daddy when she was mad at him:  "You're a poopy-pants restaurant!"

Iris the salesperson:  "Grandan, do you want to go to McDonald's now, or later?"

Rock Paper Scissors

Chester trying to teach Iris and Fiona how to play Rock Paper Scissors:

Iris: I'm going to be rock.
Chester: Don't tell me!
Fiona: I'm ready.
C: Ok, ready, one, two, three...
I: I'm going to be rock
C: No, don't tell me first, just do it.
I: Ok, I'm going to be rock
C: Ok, ready, one, two, three...go!
C: Fiona, why didn't you do it?
F: I forgot what I was going to do.
C: Was it scissors?
F: Yes, that was it. Scissors.
C: Ok, let's read a book instead.

Iris: I want Princess Bride
Fiona: No! I want Star Wars!
Iris: Nooo! Princess Bride!
Me: we just watched Princess Bride on our way back from Kansas so let's watch Star Wars today.
Fiona: Iris, knock knock.
Iris: Who's there?
Fiona: Sorry Charlie!

Letter

Fiona: "Grandan, how do you spell Trent?" (the boy in her class she has a big crush on)
Grandan: "T R E N T"

She wrote his name on a small piece of paper. Then she began carefully writing a letter to him.

Fiona: "Don't look. It's a secret."

When she finished, she folded the note, taped it shut, put several stickers on it, and asked him to mail it to Trent.

Grandan: "What does your letter say?"
Fiona: "I don't know. I can't read."

How to make a unicorn costume

Fiona had known since November 1st of last year that she wanted to be a rainbow unicorn for Halloween so I've been thinking about this one for awhile. She was very specific: white unicorn with rainbow hair and a golden/sparkly horn. I can sew enough to hold it together, but not enough that I make the finished seams "pretty" so this project feels a little rough around the edges even though my model seems happy with the results.

I used her white tights and white leotard from ballet and the pattern for a hood from the same pattern as my mom used to make my cheetah costume when I was about the same age.

White fleece $3
Sequin fabric $4
Grey and white felt $1
Rainbow yarn $5

I cut two pieces of the fleece using the hood pattern and cut the felt for the hooves and ears. I originally planned on attaching the mane with the rainbow ribbon, but later changed my mind and I didn't end up using it after all.

For the hooves, I first cut a couple of test shapes using paper to try on Fiona before settling on one size for hands and another for feet. I wanted hooves to fit like a bracelet and just slip over her hands and bare feet, but these could easily be made with elastic bands or snaps as well. Simple stitch to the right size then turn inside out.

When I made the hood I just followed the pattern making a dart on either side for the crown of the head then a straight stitch down the backside (which I later took out, you'll see why in a minute) but for those who are following these instructions...ignore that seam in the pictures. It should still be open at this point, but you can pin the two sides together if it helps you to place the ears and to mark the hole for the horn.

For the ears, I cut a small slit on the base of the ear and folded one corner over the other to shape the ear before giving it a couple of quick stitches to hold them in place. The felt held up nicely. Next I measured on my model first before sewing on the snap for under her chin.

At Grandma's advice I decided to attach the horn separately from the hood and onto a headband for more support. I just used some stiff paper rolled into a cone and cut down to size. The sequin material I found was fairly thin so it was easy enough to wrap it around the cone, pin it in place and finish it up with a few stitches on the outside seam making sure that there was some excess material (maybe 2 inches) hanging below the base of the cone like wings to wrap around a headband and stitching that in place.

Now that you have the horn you can mark on the hood where you want the hole to be placed. Mine was slightly ahead of the ears, but far enough back that it wouldn't weigh down the headband. Working from the underside I put a straight stitch down the front "forehead" and with a hem around the hole to widen it enough to fit the cone. Again in this picture, ignore the finished back seam; it should still be open at this point.

Now for the mane I wrapped yarn about 100 times around a shoebox size lid, carefully removed it from the lid and set it aside.

At this point I had already changed my mind about how to attach the mane and needed to remove the back seam from my hood, but you'll have it open up to the mark where you've marked the hole for the horn. With the hood outside in, fold the yarn loops in half and place the center fold just over the back edge so that when you finish the seam some of each loop stays on the outside of the edge. You will probably have to finish this one by hand because with the folded yarn it will be too thick for the sewing machine.

Flip the hood inside out and cut through the loops. Give it a haircut if needed. I gave this one some shorter fringe in front to keep the top full (bangs!). Using the same box lid longways this time, I wrapped yarn about 25 times to make the tail. While still on the lid, tie one side together with an extra piece of yarn then flip the lid and cut through the other side. I pinned on her tail with a safety pin so we can reuse the leotard.

Part of me wanted to make this for her because I always had homemade costumes as a kid and I wanted to do the same for them. Part of me just had to prove it to myself that I could. Mostly though, it was for this smile.

But don't worry, the other one got exactly what she wanted too, an Ariel costume from Party City for $19.95. I'll take that smile too.

Birthmark

Iris (pointing to the back of her hip): What's this spot?
Dad: That's your birthmark.
Iris: I got it for my birthday?
Dad: Uh...yeah, I guess you did.
Iris: Mom, look at my spot. I got it for my birthday!

New wheels

Iris sang The Wheels On The Bus for us tonight on our way home from Grandma's.

"The wheels on the bus go round and round...
The people on the bus move up and down...
The driver on the bus says move on back...
The babies on the bus say wah wah wah...
The mommies on the bus say shhh shhh shhh..."

Tonight I heard an extra verse from my sweet parrot:

"The daddies on the bus say I need a drink..."

Line Leader

There will be 3 older flower girls and 3 younger flower girls at Crystal and Kelly's wedding next month. Fiona and Iris are two of the three younger girls. The third girl is in between them in age. Crystal wants them to hold a long ribbon of flowers down the aisle so that they walk in a line, just like they do in preschool when the kids walk down the hallway or go to another classroom. So smart! The other day she told Fiona that she wanted her to be the line leader since she was the biggest of the little girls.

Very wise, Crystal. Very wise.

And we thought Fiona was excited before! Now she's not just talking about being a flower girl. It's a whole other Oprah now. Now she's talking about being the Line Leader of the flower girls.

Fiona's goodnight prayer

Thank you God for my family and for our delicious dinner. Thank you God for making me a princess. Thank you God for making my mommy a queen. Thank you God for making my daddy a king. Thank you God for making Iris a prince. Thank you for letting us live happily ever after in a castle.

Espanol

Fiona had her 2nd Spanish class yesterday. I'm trying hard not to be involved in the class and just to stay in my office and stay out of it.

Eduardo, her instructor, sends her on little tasks like coming to my office to get a pencil “Dame un lapiz” which she has to take back to him, or to hand me something “Aqui tienes” (here you go). They played hide and seek in the hallway “Donde esta?” and the person had to count 1-10.

Me: Fiona, can you stop running in the school? Please be quiet with your feet.
Fiona: Well, Eduardo says “Vamos! Vamos!” so I have to hurry!

We love dads

Every kid should be lucky enough to have their dad embarrass them at least once. This kid was lucky enough to have this dad embarrass him every day of school this year by dressing up in crazy costumes, standing in front of their house and waving as the high school bus drove by. What a great dad!

Dream

Every morning we ask the girls if they slept well and if they had any dreams. Fiona usually forgets her dreams but sometimes remembers and tells us what they were about. We have the exact same conversation with Iris every morning.

Me: Did you sleep well?
Iris: Yes
Me: Did you have any dreams?
Iris: One dream
Me: You had one dream? What was it about?
Iris: A nap.
Me: You dreamt about a nap? That's the most boring dream I've ever heard of!

And then we laugh.

So I was telling my parents about this and said they should start asking Iris about her dreams when she wakes up from a nap. Dad tried it this week and reported that Iris finally gave him a different answer:

Grandan: Did you have any dreams?
Iris: One dream.
Grandan: You had one dream? What was it about?
Iris: A book.
Grandan (excited that it was an answer other than "a nap"): You did? You dreamt about a book?
Iris: Yes!
Grandan: What was the book about?
Iris: A nap.

Dang!!

Excitement

Saturday the girls and I took Henry to the vet for an annual checkup and current shots. He was happy and barking on the way to the vet, but on the way home he laid down in the way back and was very quiet.

Fiona: Mom, Henry is being a good boy on the way home isn't he?
Me: I think it's because of all the excitement.
Fiona: What's "excitement"?
Me: That's when there is a time when things are exciting. Remember at the vet how Henry got so excited? It made him so tired.
Fiona: I think he's also tired because of all the scaredment.

Fiona's dream

At school the teachers took pictures of all the kids lying on their mats during nap time / rest time. They posted the pictures of the sleeping kids on the wall and asked each child to say what they were dreaming about. Some of the other kids' captions read: "Pirates" "Barbies" "Skeletons" Fiona's read: "Unicorns in jail with ghosts"

Iris the Terrible

Chester: How many times do I have to ask you to do something?
Fiona (VERY sheepishly): One, Daddy.
Chester: Right. Once. Next time you listen to me the first time.
Fiona: Yes sir.

Chester: How many times do I have to ask you to do something?
Iris: Two.

RSTU

Purple pony and pink pony
Quaker oatmeal
Red roses (Grandan’s idea – she’s bringing two roses and will give one to each teacher. Suck up.)

STU – not so worried about these. U will be Unicorn, I can tell you that right now. She should be able to pick a S and a T easily, but why don’t we make this fun. We will leave this entirely up to her. I've added polls over to the right for you to vote. Knowing Fiona and the choices she’s made so far (ponies, jewelry, coins, bear, doll) what do you guess she’ll pick for S and T?

My daughter the lawyer

(Driving to school)
Fiona: Look Mom! A pink car! Did you see it?
Me: No, I didn't see it.
Fiona: It looked just like the pink car we saw the other day. Do you remember that one?
Me: No, I don't remember it.
Fiona: You don't remember it? It was a pink car. We saw it. Remember now?
Me: No, I don't remember that.

(A few minutes later)
Fiona: Mom, do you have a brain in your head?
Me: Yes I do.
Fiona: Well, can you use your brain to remember the pink car we saw?
